PAVILION OF ART AND DESIGN, NEW YORK
Not Just Window Dressing: The Art of Design –
In 1818 John Keats wrote in his poem Endymion, “ A thing of beauty is a joy forever.” Since that is empirically true, the globetrotting art/design collecting cognoscenti will be joyfully snapping up things of beauty, henceforth at The Pavilion of Art and Design fair (PAD). PAD which was established in 2007, now has editions in London, Paris and, the November 2011 inaugural at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. PAD is a boutique art fair which presents, Modern Art, Design, Decorative Arts, Photography, Jewelry, and Tribal Art from the 1890s till today.
Spearheaded by French dealers and co-directors Patrick Perrin and Stephane Custot, these two visionaries have surgically executed a fusion of more than 50 high calibre international galleries. PAD provides a unique opportunity to view and collect museum quality painting and sculpture by artists, such as Pablo Picasso, Willem de Kooning, and Georgia O’Keeffe, as well as historic and established designers. A smattering of 20th century design objects by Alberto Giacometti and Gio Ponti, all vetted by a panel of experts in their respective fields, are also included.
PAD proves that well-designed objects do more than simply provide an aesthetic departure from the mundane. The Pavilion of Art and Design fairs, clearly illustrate that form, function and beauty are inseparable. Great design is beautiful to live with and can provide insulation and comfort against the bum times. It tells a story about the past, present and future.
In the art fair laden universe of the 21st century this art and design crossroads is a watershed exhibition for collectors. Whatever the piece, be it painting or sculpture, their allure is inviting and exhilarating.
Now that’s artful living.
PAD Paris, March 28- April 1, 2012. PAD London October 10-14, 2012.
